Weezer – (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To

Posted on January 29, 2010 at 12:57 am in

For many reasons, I’m ready to celebrate the end of January. I have a new lease starting on Feb. 1, I have Presidents Day off, work sucks this month, etc. So here’s a catchy tune the gf brought to my attention to take you into the weekend and take me into February. The video seems to be all bro’s before ho’s – not a vibe I got from the song but I don’t hate it.

Broken Bells – The High Road

Posted on January 29, 2010 at 12:48 am in

Broken Bells released this as their first single a week or two ago, and it’s taken a bit, but it’s really growing on me.  The duo consists of Danger Mouse (award winning producer and 1/2 of Gnarls Barkley) and James Mercer (the lead vocalist for The Shins).  It’s an unbelievably random pairing, but the two take their different genres, toss them in a blender, and the result is a good one.  Check the first single off of their upcoming self-titled album, due out in March.

Hot Chip – I Feel Better

Posted on January 29, 2010 at 12:32 am in

The clowns pictured above are responsible for my new favorite song of the moment.  ”I Feel Better” is unique in all aspects, and delivers exactly what I’ve been looking for lately.  The British electropop group put together an addictive track that does it all for me.  Amazingly catchy chorus that’s been stuck in my head since I first heard the jam a couple hours ago.

Miike Snow – Billie Holiday

Posted on January 29, 2010 at 12:22 am in

Here’s a track that didn’t quite make Miike Snow’s tremendously underrated self-titled release.  Off their B-Sides, this would’ve fit right in with the rest of their studio album…not really sure why it didn’t make the cut.  While their music is all pretty similar, I’m still spinning their album like it’s nobody’s business…and it goes without saying that I was intrigued when some of their unreleased material landed in my hands.  Give it a go.

Justin Taylor (feat. Ratatat) – Why Can’t I Fly

Posted on January 29, 2010 at 12:14 am in

justin taylor

I always make myself available when I see a Ratatat sample, regardless of if I know the other artists involved or not.  In this case, I’ve heard absolutely nothing about Justin Taylor, but he managed to get Ratatat to lay down the background for this track so I figured it was worth a listen.  Apparently this kid is 18 and is building up some steam in the underground music world; definitely not a party-starter, and the hopeful, dreamy lyrics are a bit much, but it’s got a relaxed vibe to it.  Worth a listen in my book.  Spotted over at P&P.

Plasma- Crazy (I’m Not a Band Remix)

Posted on January 25, 2010 at 9:41 pm in

Plasma-Teenage-DrugsThis remix, from I’m Not A Band, takes a song from a mysterious indie band named Plasma, and spins it out of control.  I have never heard of the group who remixed this, nor the creators of the original song; yet I do know that this is straight fire and it’s been on repeat all day.  If Ghostland Observatory met Miike Snow and went on to have a threesome with Passion Pit, the result would be this jam right here.

Hathbanger- Party & Bullshit (In The USA Remix)

Posted on January 22, 2010 at 11:28 am in

bigmiley1I never thought I would be able to listen to a Miley Cyrus track and actually enjoy it.  Little did I know all I needed was a little mash-up with my favorite Biggie song of all time, “Party & Bullshit”.  Mashed together by a DJ that goes by the name Hathbanger, who is a student at CU Boulder and also a professional skier.  This is a mash-up that should have never work, yet it works perfectly.  Check it out…

Damian Marley & Nasir Jones- Strong Will Continue

Posted on January 22, 2010 at 11:08 am in

damian-marley-nasir-jones-distant-relatives-450x450So I’m  sitting here in Chicago’s shitty ass airport for a two hour layover and I jump online to find a beautiful surprise on Nah Right.  That surprise is none other than the first full length song from the album Distant Relatives.  This song is rumored to be the first single for the collaborative album that Nas and Damian Marley are releasing on 4/20 this year.  I think this project is going to be epic considering how well these two sounded together on “Road To Zion” from Damian’s previous album.  Definitely going to be an album to look out for.  Here is a little teaser that came out a little while ago showing the recording process:

Throwback Thursday 1/21/10 Edition

Posted on January 21, 2010 at 11:25 pm in

We were slacking last week when it came to Throwback Thursday, and the people were pissed.  The people being our 10 fans.  I wanted to make sure I threw something at you all this week, so I’ve been digging tirelessly through the archives to come up with three prime throwback gems that you all forgot existed.  All three of these jams are polar opposites of each other, yet each and every one is a banger in it’s own, unique way.  So let’s get it:

Go West – King of Wishful Thinking (1990)

You gotta love old school album covers.  Two bros just casually standing in what looks like horribly Photoshopped fake rain, contemplating life as a whole.  And the best part is that this shit was POWERFUL when people first saw it, like Pulitzer-prize winning art.  Their jam “King of Wishful Thinking” doesn’t quite compete with the album cover, but it’s no slouch either.  It’s  the ultimate 80’s track, it’s got everything and anything you could want…even though it was released in 1990.  Huge chorus, catchy ass drums laced in the background; Go West kills it.

Mobb Deep – Shook Ones Pt. II (1995)

Mobb Deep rattled the rap world with this perfectly crafted anthem in ‘95.  There’s something about the beat that makes it haunting yet chilled out at the same time.  If you’re entirely out of the loop, you might recognize the beat from 8 Mile, where Eminem ( B Rabbit!!!) gets up on stage at the end and crushes his freestyle opponent.  Anyways, this song has yet to get old for me, even at it’s 5:26 running time.  Bring back the memories and hit play.

Soul Decision – Faded (2000)

Yes it’s questionable in it’s sexual orientation, but damn this is such an underrated jam.  It took me like 3 hours to even scrounge up a picture of these dudes, it’s like they never existed.  Aside from “Faded”, they didn’t really exist, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.  I don’t know if they qualify as a “boy-band”, I’m gonna go with no just to cover my ass; either way this song is a pure gem.  Poor decision by the mysterious rapper who jumps on this for all of 10 seconds though, definitely lost respect from everyone in the music world…he’s like the 90’s version of that rapper on the Jonas Brothers jam.  Whatever gets them radio play I guess.

The xx – VCR (Matthew Dear Remix)

Posted on January 21, 2010 at 10:40 pm in

I’m a huge fan of the entire debut album from The xx, and the original being an extremely mellow song I was pretty hesitant to give this a listen.  I was afraid it would be an acidic dance remix or something out of control.  Matthew Dear definitely pulls it off though, he’s able to give it a little more “oomf” but at the same time keep the relaxed vibe of the original.  Definitely well done, check it out.
