I just got back to safety after a chaotic weekend in NYC, highlighted by the Deadmau5 concert on Friday night. I’m gonna try to go ahead and break down the experience of seeing Deadmau5 live for you, but it’ll do it absolutely no justice.

As a precursor, this was my techno concert debut…so I had no idea what to expect. I knew Deadmau5′s recorded material was absurd, but unlike Jimbo, I’ve never considered myself a techno raving maniac. I should have known that the live atmosphere would put everything on another level. First off, the line to get into the Roseland Ballroom was wrapped around street corner after street corner. The crowd was hard to get a feel for…you had your complete freakshows (male and female), you had your emo dudes in skinny jeans, your frat bros, you had your rave addicts decked out in tie dye and glow sticks, you had your model girls and your young professionals. Really just a dose of everything; apparently everyone likes what Deadmau5 is doing with music these days.

After waiting a solid hour to get into the place, we grabbed a few beverages and found our bearings. To give you a visual, the Roseland Ballroom fits more or less 3,500 people, and this place was entirely sold out. It’s pretty much just a huge dance floor with a second floor balcony, and the whole place was wall to wall. The guy is more or less one of the top DJ’s in the world right now, so this was to be expected.

Deadmau5 came on around midnight equipped with his infamous LED mousehead, unveiled his life-altering light-cube, and the madness began. I need to talk about the light-cube for a second, cause this thing is a complete game-changer. To be honest, every concert I go to from now on will be a disappointment unless it has one of these. You can get a little feel for it from the photo above, and the videos below. It’s just made up of a bunch of LED panels that change colors and designs…and it does so to the beat of his music. That, in combination with the lights behind him and his LED mouse head that changes colors was way too much for my mind to handle.

The videos below will do absolutely no justice for this madness. The combination of catchy, pounding beats with the absurd light show make me want to pack my bags and just follow the Deadmau5 global tour. And like an idiot, I forgot to bring my sweet video camera to the show, so these are just random videos I found from the night. Some might cause you to have a seizure when the beat drops, but most clips are pretty good quality. If you want, listen and download the studio versions below each video. Next time Deadmau5 is in your city, drop whatever you’re doing and find a ticket.
