Introduction to Stereo IQ

If you like hip-hop and you have the internet, you should all be familiar with Rap Genius by now. You know, the site/social community that breaks down rap lyrics line by line until you understand exactly what the artist is talking about. The dudes that run RG no longer want to exclude other genres of music, so they’ve recently jump-started Stereo IQ — which serves the same purpose, but for these other genres. They’re asking their collaborative sites (where we come in) that don’t strictly focus on hip-hop to help spread the word. So if you’re looking to chip in … Continue reading

Ludovin (feat. Childish Gambino) – Tricks

Meet Ludovin, aka Ludwig Göransson. You don’t know him now– but you might recognize him as the co-writer and co-producer of Childish Gambino’s debut album, Camp. He just recently released a quick, six-track EP, in which “Tricks” is the closer. Quality production, a new verse from Gambino — that should be about all you need to convince yourself to press play below. Pick up Ludovin’s free project here. HAIM – Forever

Do you know anything else that sounds like this? Honestly, try to think of something that even remotely sounds similar in today’s music world. The blogosphere is tossing around some MJ references — which is weirdly accurate, except for the fact that Haim is comprised of three sisters from Los Angeles. Either way, “Forever” serves as my introduction to this trio — and I’m sold. Game, set, match. Thanks for playing. Pick up their free EP here, and be on the lookout for this golden west coast trio in the future. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Download: HAIM … Continue reading

Sigur Rós – Lúppulagið

Cue the immediate sleep playlist! We have to make an addition and we have to do it as soon as possible. Sigur Rós’ new album Valtari is slated for a May 28th release, and this little lost B-side from their live album Inni has me 9 layers deep in REM sleep. No words, no nonsense, just straight, unadulterated musical sleep. Incredible. This is a certified, first-ballot, immediate sleep playlist hall of famer. Gemini Club – By Surprise

This three-piece electro-rock crew coming out of Chicago has one of those distinct sounds that’s clearly bound for glory. Apparently their live shows are something serious (according to their Facebook page), where they have this innate ability to burst into random remixes on the fly. All I know is that “By Surprise” is the perfect balance between indie rock and electronic music — and the result is gold. Be on the lookout for their upcoming EP Here We Sit, due out April 17th. Pre-order here. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Download: Gemini Club – By Surprise Tweet

Shadows on Stars – Shadows On Stars (Free Album)

Everybody loves free albums. Especially when they’re unexpectedly unique and easy on the ears. The crew over at Pigeons & Planes introduced the world to Shadows on Stars a few weeks back, and now that we have a full, official debut album — their talent is more obvious than ever. Excited to see what’s in store down the line for this group. Stream the album in it’s entirety below, and add it to the library via the download link. The Fortnight @ 5:00 (Vol. 5)

Last Friday night I completely lost my dome when my alma mater went straight hammertime on the universally hated Blue Devils. CJ McCollum showed the world (that crossover, CHRIST) that he’s the college version of Skip To My Lou, and the bartender overserved me immediately. For whatever reason, Jimbo and I find this picture of Lehigh’s mascot to be absolutely hysterical — so I had to use it to segway into this week’s Fortnight mix. That is all. Shout out to DJ B-Rob. Happy weekend world. Tweet

The Knocks – R.O.Y.L. (Official Video)

From The Knocks: “After hours spent gathering and editing countless amazing and creative fan submissions, the music video for our upcoming single, “R.O.Y.L,” is here! First and foremost, we want to thank everyone who took the time to support us and make a video. Without you, we wouldn’t have this wonderful masterpiece that will surely be talked about by art and film critics for their rest of their lives. We also want to give a shout out to Neon Hitch, Eliza Doolittle, and Chiddy Bang for making some special cameo appearances. We hope you enjoy the video as much as we do!” Tweet

Kirko Bangz – Drank In My Cup (J. Cole Freestyle)

Remember when Rai Knight dropped her 5 favorite tracks of the moment on us and introduced our world to Kirko Bangz? She was onto something it seems. “Drank In My Cup” is currently sitting pretty at #10 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, with established rappers like J. Cole jumping in on it. Hit Cole’s freestyle below. Love you Rai. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] Download: J. Cole – Drank In My Cup (Freestyle) Tweet
