One Room is back in the building. The mystery man (men?) sneakily crept up on the blogosphere back at the end of last year with “I Want You” (check my CSI Miami skills as to who’s behind One Room), and made another splash with “Wait”. The latest release follows the trend of spacey, The Weeknd-esque vibes, and it’s established the act as something to legitimately keep an eye on. Conner Youngblood is one of the few up and coming artists who has managed to strike a chord with me with every one of his tracks released to date. Granted, he has a limited catalog as of now, but it’s still a noteworthy accomplishment in my book. “A Summer Song” and “Australia” continue to get significant spins in my world. There’s no way M.I.A. can top the addictive x-factor of “Paper Planes”, and it’ll be borderline impossible for her to top that level of commercial success. If it’s been a couple years, listen to that song again…shit is too good. With 2012 comes a new album from the Sri Lankan Tamil descendant, and “Bad Girls” is our first look at her new material. It’s 60 minutes of old, new, and unreleased audible fire. Pretty Lights had a huge year in 2011. That being said, it’s clear he’s decided to start 2012 off with a power move. In my mind, “We Must Go On” is arguably his best single since “Finally Moving”. In fact, when you take a look at the vocal samples and general composition, it’s abnormally similar to “Finally Moving”. There’s no real heavy “drop” per se, rather, it’s a well-crafted instrumental that’s perfect for getting shit done. The weekend’s winding down, so we might as well slow the pace down with a new 1:37 Frank Ocean drop. This is clearly not finished, but as an avid supporter of Mr. Ocean I have a duty to spread this around to the people. Can I spark a little argument for a minute? I know nothing about Electric Guest. Word on the street is their debut album, titled Mondo, is produced by Danger Mouse. This is note-worthy for a handful of reasons, but generally because everything Danger Mouse touches turns to gold. He formed Gnarls Barkley. He formed Broken Bells. Remember that mashup album of Jay-Z’s The Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album? That was him too. Terence Ryan, the kid with the impressive video for “Alan’s Right” which we shared with you all last week, just released his full Skeleton EP for the masses. Everything is handled by Mr. Ryan, from the production, to the writing, to the vocals. This is an eye-opening project, especially when you consider that I knew nothing about him whatsoever two weeks ago. The production is crisp, and he sounds like an artist who’s been doing this shit for a while. I’ll definitely keep my eyes open for him down the line. Echo Boom is gonna be something serious. Seriously, whoever put the connection together that Cris Cab needed to work with Wyclef deserves some kind of award. It’s such a natural, obvious pairing, and “Rihanna’s Gun” is a prime example of why they should continue working together. Did Wyclef toss in a hint of heavy dubstep bass there too?
