The Hood Internet – Nightchain (Wale vs. Kavinsky)

I watched Drive for the second time last night, and there are a handful of things that I still can’t get over. The unbelievably graphic elevator scene, the sneaky-great soundtrack, and Ron Perlman’s UNCANNY RESEMBLANCE to a baboon. The shit is mindblowing.

Anyways, The Hood Internet have decided to mash up one of the tracks from Drive, Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” with Wale’s “Chain Music”. The result is working for me at the moment. Check it out below, and go compare some pictures of baboons to the man above. No disrespect Mr. Perlman, you were a boss in that film.

The Young Professionals – Video Games (Lana Del Rey Cover)

Lana Del Rey remixes are clearly overdone, that’s not a question. This isn’t a remix though, and as a cover, it deserves your attention.

The Young Professionals take Lana’s dark, gloomy anthem and inject it with an upbeat pop sound that demands to be heard. Apparently it’s only available via streaming on their Facebook page at the moment, or the YouTube video below. Check it out world.

Anybody fiending for a Born To Die review?

Emeli Sandé – Heaven (Official Video)

Whoa — not quite sure how this one slipped under the radar. Emeli Sandé is this smooth Scottish R&B singer who’s just pulled the rug out from under me. As far as comparisons go, I’m coming up empty. She’s like this Janelle Monae/Beyoncé hybrid that’s heavily influenced by the jazz/breakbeat scene. Anyone? Maybe? I don’t care, this shit deserves to be recognized. Watch the official video for her debut single below.

St. Lucia – We Got It Wrong (Xaphoon Jones Remix)

Xaphoon Jones has jumped on the official remix train for St. Lucia’s new single, and he’s lathered the track up with his token glitchy, synthed-out vibe. “We Got It Wrong” has been given the remix treatment from Starsmith (Ellie Goulding’s producer), Xaphoon Jones, and Lenno — all of which are available in one tightly-knit package on iTunes today thanks to Neon Gold. Glory.

Oh, and if you don’t have your tickets yet, be sure to catch St. Lucia live along with The Knocks, Savoir Adore and Magic Man in Boston on March 2nd. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

Tickets here.

Kid Cudi – Teleport 2 Me, Jamie

Whenever a hip-hop artist attempts to make a “rock” album, the shit sucks. That’s a proven fact. We’re lucky then that I can’t really consider Kid Cudi to be a “rapper”. He’s always been too spacey and weird to be contained in a stereotypical genre like that. The uneducated say that his upcoming WZRD album is him attempting to go the rock route — but again, he’s too bizarre to just attempt a rock album. I see it as him wanting to explore other sounds and mess with different kinds of productions from what he’s grown accustomed to. With that being said, “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie” is the most accessible track that we’ve heard off the album to date. It’s catchy, it’s melodic, and I think it would’ve fit in fine on his last album. Oh, and it samples that jam from Drive, which somehow got hosed for a Best Picture nomination this year.

WZRD is due out February 28th, so we’ll be allowed to form our opinions then.

Cris Cab – Echo Boom (Mixtape)

Cris Cab has put together his his most note-worthy collection of songs to date in the form of his latest mixtape, Echo Boom. The anticipated project is presented by Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club, and features production from the likes of Wyclef Jean, 88-Keys, and Pharrell himself. This is clearly the most “official” project we’ve seen from the 18 year-old Miami native, and it’s bound to serve as his stepping stone to mainstream success. Stream it below via Soundcloud, and hit the download link to grab the project in it’s entirety.

One Room – Believe

One Room is back in the building. The mystery man (men?) sneakily crept up on the blogosphere back at the end of last year with “I Want You” (check my CSI Miami skills as to who’s behind One Room), and made another splash with “Wait”. The latest release follows the trend of spacey, The Weeknd-esque vibes, and it’s established the act as something to legitimately keep an eye on. While we only have heard three tracks from One Room, he/they have my attention.

Conner Youngblood – Sketches Pt. 1 (Mixtape)

Conner Youngblood is one of the few up and coming artists who has managed to strike a chord with me with every one of his tracks released to date. Granted, he has a limited catalog as of now, but it’s still a noteworthy accomplishment in my book. “A Summer Song” and “Australia” continue to get significant spins in my world. Last week he decided to expand his catalog, and dropped a mixtape on our heads. I’m just getting around to listening, and per usual, I can’t get enough. Keep an eye out for this dude via his Facebook and Twitter, and stream/download his project below.

M.I.A. – Bad Girls

There’s no way M.I.A. can top the addictive x-factor of “Paper Planes”, and it’ll be borderline impossible for her to top that level of commercial success. If it’s been a couple years, listen to that song again…shit is too good. With 2012 comes a new album from the Sri Lankan Tamil descendant, and “Bad Girls” is our first look at her new material. It’s too much to ask for it to live up to “Paper Planes” — but do you see yourself listening to this at all after that first initial spin?

Pitchfork with the premiere.
