Justin Taylor – The Prequel (Mixtape)

Justin Taylor sent over his first official mixtape this past weekend, entitled The Prequel.  I’ve tossed up a couple of posts on the site from this up and comer out of New Jersey, but it’s good to finally hear his first official release.  He borrows some beats from indie bands like Ratatat and Empire of the Sun, hip hop moguls such as Jay and Kanye, and he also dabbles in producing his own.  I’m really into his blend of singing and rapping; it works well for him and he definitely has some big things on the horizon.  Here are a … Continue reading

Justin Taylor – Closing In On Me

Here’s a new track off Justin Taylor’s upcoming mixtape The Prequel.  I’ve only heard two of his tracks, but so far he’s got me hooked.  His jam sampling Ratatat was in my head for weeks, and “Closing In On Me” has the same feel to it.  It’s tough to put in a genre, but I definitely hear an ever-so-slight hint of Cudi in him.  Definitely more R&B, but there are similar characteristics.  The Prequel drops March 6th, and looks like something to definitely keep your eyes out for.  P&P with the find yet again. Justin Taylor (feat. Ratatat) – Why Can’t I Fly

I always make myself available when I see a Ratatat sample, regardless of if I know the other artists involved or not.  In this case, I’ve heard absolutely nothing about Justin Taylor, but he managed to get Ratatat to lay down the background for this track so I figured it was worth a listen.  Apparently this kid is 18 and is building up some steam in the underground music world; definitely not a party-starter, and the hopeful, dreamy lyrics are a bit much, but it’s got a relaxed vibe to it.  Worth a listen in my book.  Spotted over at … Continue reading
